Happy International Scrapbook Day! Today, Simple Stories is doing an Instagram hop to celebrate this special day with lots of inspiration from the Design Team and the opportunity to win prizes. If you want to be part of this experience, visit @simplestories_ and follow the instructions, you are going to enjoy it! Now, let's talk about the layout I designed for this celebration using the gorgeous Summer Snapshots collection and photos of my daughter eating an ice cream cone at grandma's home.
After choosing the photos, I edited them to fit under the chipboard frame from the collection. I love the look of the Polaroid frames and they are perfect for these cute photos; don't you agree? Then, I chose the title. For that I used the Page Pieces die cuts "Summer Snapshot". To give the words dimension I used foam tape behind them. In the center of the frame, I added a chipboard ice cream to reinforce the theme of the layout.
Then I was thinking on how to add patterned paper to this layout, but not as I traditionally do it. This is when I came up with the idea of adding pieces of papers coming from the sides in an angular position. I chose two contrasting patterned papers to go together on one of the sides of the layout, then repeated the same for two other sides. On the top, I added a piece of a white polka dot paper and a piece of the stripes paper.
To cut the papers, I placed them in the layout slightly angled and use a pencil to mark where I want to cut, then I used the trimmer to cut it. Before adding the papers, I distressed their edges for more texture. On the left side I used a piece of an orange floral paper and a teal paper.
On the right side I used a paper with thin stripes and a navy polka dot paper. After adding them to the layout, I stitched a white border around them using the sewing machine. To add more patterned papers to this layout, I used two sheets of the 6" x 8" paper pad to mat the frame. One of the papers is yellow with citrus and the other is a coral checker. By adding those papers, I added more color and interest in the photo's areas, helping them stand out in the layout.
Since this is a busy layout, just a few embellishments are needed. In the upper corner of the frame, I added a few florals from the bits and pieces die cuts, the 12" x 12" sticker sheet, and the rub-ons. For the journaling, I used a green tag behind the photo area, which can be pulled since I made a pocket by adding the tape only around the left, right, and bottom sides of the yellow paper. Then, I added a few decorative brads and enamel dots to the layout. To finish this page, I added a few black paint splatters using acrylic paint diluted in water and a brush.
On the sides of the title, I added a few heart stickers and embellished the garland using enamel dots in the same color. If you want to watch me creating this layout, check the process video here:
